NOVEMBER 29 | Advent week 1
GABRIEL VISITS MARY from Isaiah 9:6-7 & Luke 1:26-38

A millennium before the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary that we read in Luke 1, God had made a promise to David: “Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever” (2 Samuel 7:16). Nearly 300 years later, Isaiah said God was going to establish the throne of David “from this time forth and forevermore” (Isaiah 9:7). These prophetic words uttered by Isaiah pointed forward to Jesus. Around 700 years after Isaiah delivered God’s warnings and promises to his people, the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary. Gabriel’s words sound familiar, an echo of the promise to David and the prophecy of Isaiah: “And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:32b–33). Gabriel told Mary that Jesus was God’s fulfillment of his promise to David!Jesus died, rose again from the dead, and is seated on an everlasting throne in heaven. Prophecy fulfilled. Promises kept. Just as God kept his promise to David and to his people Israel, he keeps his promises to us, his people.
